Doctors blamed her thyroid, but Bering knows that the real problem—she was eating bad foods because she did not feel good about herself. “Gaining weight has as much to do with emotional well-being than physical,” said Bering. “You don’t just get to 200 pounds because you’re eating bad food. You’re eating bad food for a reason.” She was once one of the features editors of a local newspaper, but as she kept gaining weight, she felt more self-conscious of her weight and started giving her stories to interns. When an antique store went up for sale, she changed careers so she would not have to be seen in public.
