On Sunday evening, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) ordered a recall of 143 million pounds of beef dating back to Feb 1, 2006—from Chino-based Westland/Hallmark Meat Co. This marks the nation’s largest beef recall in American history.
A disturbing video filmed undercover is what sparked an animal-abuse investigation. The video shows cows that are too sick to stand, being shoved with forklifts and dragged with chains across a cement floor in a slaughterhouse. The company provides meat to the National School Lunch Program, and officials are now scrambling to prevent the questionable beef from reaching school lunch counters. They estimate about 37 million pounds of the beef has gone to schools. However, the USDA insists the threat is small.
