Although she was never really skinny in her life, Lynn Bering knew that something was wrong when she gained 100 pounds in four years. Doctors blamed her thyroid, but Bering knows that the real problem—she was eating bad foods because she did not feel good about herself. “Gaining weight has as much to do with emotional well-being than physical,” said Bering. “You don’t just get to 200 pounds because you’re eating bad food. You’re eating bad food for a reason.”
She was once one of the features editors of a local newspaper, but as she kept gaining weight, she felt more self-conscious of her weight and started giving her stories to interns. When an antique store went up for sale, she changed careers so she would not have to be seen in public. The store was like a shelter from the outside world.
Today, Lynn Bering is 5 feet, five inches tall, weighs 129 pounds, and wears a size 4. How did she do it?
Her initial motivator was the set of 19 stairs in her store. Bering had a lot of trouble getting up and down the stairs and was worried about how anyone would get her down the stairs if she ever got sick. Moving around was getting harder to do and eventually, Bering had enough. She joined weight watchers online and started walking at the track of the local university. Her biggest helper was the blog that she started.
Bering began writing down her inner thoughts in her blog to stabilize her bad feelings before she began losing weight. “Lynn’s Weight Loss Journey” began as a way to let her sister and a friend know how she was doing with the weight loss, but eventually, Bering started receiving comments from strangers about how her blog helped inspire others who were struggling with their weight. The more Bering wrote in her blog, the more weight she lost.
Lynn Bering has lost 168 pounds to date. She eats mostly a vegetarian diet, exercises 5 times a day, and still uses the Weight Watchers network on line. Losing all of that weight has helped Bering on the inside as well as the outside. She feels good about losing all of that weight, has a much easier time moving around, and can play with her granddaughter for long periods of time. The most important thing she learned was how to love her body and live in the moment. It took a lot of work to get there, but Bering loves that she reached her weight loss goals.
