workoutMaybe you workout to reach your goal of getting a six-pack, or you want to be strong and fit even when you hit your forties and fifties (maybe even sixties). Maybe you workout to stay athletic, or even just to be functional in daily life. Whatever the reason, it’s a good one.

The majority of people who want to go to the gym have an aesthetic goal. It’s great to want to put on muscle or lose fat, but that shouldn’t be the only reason you workout. The benefits of exercise are numerous, and having a reason to workout won’t always get you out of the bed. Sometimes you need to tell yourself why you began training in the first place.

For example, some days you just don’t care about looking good. Life just isn’t going your way and so the last thing you care about is the way you look. On those days it’s good to be reminded that you need to keep training so that you don’t grow to become old and slow.

The Difference: Goals and Reasons
Having multiple reasons is different then having multiple goals. There should only be one fitness goal you work toward at a time. For example, your primary goal can be get a six-pack and lean out. However, the other three reasons determine the style of your training. Your workouts are functional and incorporate almost 100% compound movements because of your reason to be functional in daily life. In addition, they vary tremendously and incorporate athletic training, which in turn serves as your cardiovascular training, helping you to lean out.

How do I find my reasons?
Each one of us already knows why we workout. We know what motivates us to get to the gym. But sometimes, when we really don’t want to train, we decide to forget our reasons. The solution to this is to write all your reasons down on a piece of paper and post it in your room or some place where you know you’ll see it everyday.

That is a really great distinction. I have never thought about it that way and will now reevaluate my reasons and separate them from my goals. I also liked how you said that you can only work towards one goal at a time. That is very true.
