Vitamin B3, also known as niacin, vitamin P, or vitamin PP, is necessary for cell respiration and the release of energy from nutrients, much like B1 and B2.
Vitamin B3 can an also help reduce cholesterol, treat arteriosclerosis and help keep your nervous system functioning regularly. To hit the RDA amount, look to chicken, nuts, dried peas or beans, and tuna.
A deficiency in B3 can cause pellagra, characterized by irritability, diarrhea and even dementia. On the other end of the spectrum, too much niacin can result in liver damage. That said, the recommended daily allowance for B3 is between 14-18 mg daily for adults.
