milkVitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin essential to maintain healthy teeth, skeletal and soft tissue, mucous membranes, and skin. Vitamin A is also good for your vision in low light conditions, and some researchers think it may be beneficial for reproduction and breast feeding for women.

There are two different types of vitmain A: Retinol (the active form) and Carotenoids. Retinol is found in animal liver, and whole milk, as well as other foods with many vitamins.  Carotenoids are found in plants, and a good example of a carotenoid is beta-carotene, an antioxidant.

According to Medline Plus”>Medline Plus ,"Antioxidants protect cells from damage caused by unstable substances called free radicals. Free radicals are believed to contribute to certain chronic diseases and play a role in the degenerative processes seen in aging.”

Good sources of vitamin A include foods that come from animals, such as milk, cheese, eggs, meat, cod and halibut fish oil.

Ah! I heard that vitamin A is supposed to help improve vision for those who have trouble seeing at night (from this site). So, I’ve been making sure I’m taking a multivitamin, in addition to eating vitamin A enriched foods. I’m sure it takes a while to take effect on my night vision, but I’ve felt healthier since I started!
