chips and dipNo Double Dipping! That is usually the general rule of thumb at a party where chips and dip are served. There is a good reason, according to scientific research, besides people finding it disgusting. i> Fox News recently reported that each time you double dip, you are passing thousands of bacteria from your mouth into the dip, which end up being passed on to others.

Clemson University was inspired to perform this study from an episode of Seinfeld when George Costanza is yelled at for double dipping at a funeral. Nine students were asked to bite into a wheat cracker, and then dip it for three seconds in a tablespoon of dip. Three to six crackers were used per sample of dip. The sample was analyzed for bacteria. In conclusion, each incidence of double dipping passed about 10,000 bacteria into the remaining dip.

As we all know, bacteria are known for transmitting the common cold and other illnesses. Plus, ingesting everyone else’s bacteria is disgusting. It would be like kissing everyone in the room. Keep this thought in mind next time you reach for the dip at a party. One way to avoid double dipping and still enjoy the dip would be to take the container it came from and scoop some dip on your plate with a spoon. You can have your own personal dip and will not have to worry about someone else’s germs in it. Plus, if you double dipped, it would not matter because it is your dip.
