man on scale Believe it or not, one in 10 people with anorexia who are male. David Gwynfor Samuel, a medical student in the United Kingdom is a prime example. Recently, while he was on a psychiatry rotation, he realized that he had anorexia. According to the British Medical Journal , he saw, “a room full of human mirrors of my bony form.”

David had always been a fat child, and he was also born with a congenital deformity of his lower right leg. “As these together made me stand out like a sore thumb, I decided as a teenager that the least I could do was to lose some weight,” he said. “My looking slim and trim would not only benefit my leg but also attract attention from girls, something most teenage boys crave.”

Unfortunately, his lifestyle change slowly turned into a battle against food and eating. To read his story, check out the British Medical Journal or an article written in the Wall Street Journal.
