Supplements and Absorption

vitamins One concern that some individuals have when it comes to their supplement routine is making sure that what they are taking is being absorbed effectively.  You’ve likely heard that getting your nutrition from real foods is often better than taking it in pill form, and this is a big reason why.  Generally the body will absorb nutrients slightly better when it comes from food because this is how mother nature intended it.

Supplement companies are however making their vitamins a lot better now to help increase the absorption rates so they are closer to being on par with food.

One particular class of nutrients though, the fat soluble vitamins, require one additional factor in order to be effectively absorbed - dietary fat intake.

Since these vitamins are stored in the body fat, they are not required to be eaten every single day.  If you go for a few days without getting an adequate consumption, it’s not the end of the world because you will likely have some stored away in your fat cells and this will ensure that your needs are met.

Individuals who are at risk however are those who do not take in a lot of dietary fat with their meal plan or those who are incredibly lean.  First, by not taking in the dietary fat from food these fat soluble vitamins will not be able to effectively get used by the body.  Then if they are incredibly lean, since the vitamins are stored in fat tissue, there will be at a lower concentration available to them if they are getting an insufficient intake.

This then is yet another reason why it is good to make sure you do get some fat in your diet. Not only is a good macronutrient for satiety but it also has many nutritional benefits as well. Along with increased vitamin absorption you will also likely notice effects with the quality of your skin, hair and complexion.

So make sure you aren’t cutting down this essential macronutrient too low in your diet.  It really is not something to be so feared of.
