microwave dishesMornings can be rough. By the time you wake up, brush your teeth, shower, get dressed, get the kids ready (if you have them) and possibly grab a bite for breakfast, it’s already past time for you to leave, and you haven’t made your lunch yet. You are then forced to either skip lunch, eat fast food or get something healthy, yet most likely over priced. It becomes a burden on both the stomach and the pockets.

Fortunately, there is a solution that is both healthy and economical – plan ahead. The boy scouts motto is ‘be prepared’. By taking that motto and making it our own, we can prepare for the week before it actually arrives. Start by going to your local Wal-Mart, K-mart, etc. and picking up some sectioned microwaveable dishes. Take one day per week – I always use Sundays – and cook your meals for the coming week. Store the food in your trays and voila, you have just solved the issue of eating on the run. In the morning, grab a plate on the way to work.

Also, have quick snack foods set aside that you can grab in a hurry – fruit, yogurt and nuts are all examples of things you can get quickly without a lot of prep time. Take it a step further by planning breakfast and dinner as well. You can develop a menu for the coming week—buy the foods necessary for the menu and enjoy. Of course, that is a lot of cooking for one day, so you may want to prepare lunches on one day and dinner on the next. You can also save time my making thing that are quick, yet plentiful – chili, veggies and anything else that can easily be prepared in bulk.

By preparing foods in advance, you will make your body - and your finances – much healthier in the long run.
