acne Many guys who ingest whey protein tend to complain of a common problem: acne. Is the whey protein the reason why? A recent comment from Stronglifts.com forum tried to delve into topic. Basically, they explain that whey is a dairy product, and like any dairy product, it’s a byproduct of cheese. Allergic reactions (such as skin breakouts, lactose intolerance and acne) are very common with a diet containing dairy.

Your skin is the largest organ of your body. Skin problems say a lot about your health, which is influenced by your diet. Besides dairy, eggs, seafood, wheat and many more can cause allergies. The only way to get to know your body is through by removing what triggers reactions.

Start by monitoring exactly how much whey you’re ingesting. The author of the article explains that you only need more than 3 scoops daily if you want 3g/kg daily protein. He suggests to alternate your protein sources: ground round, chicken breast, tuna cans, eggs, etc. Trial & error works best to know what causes the food allegies. Start with 1-2 scoops whey daily for a week. Keep the rest of your diet the same. If you’re ok: the author says to try 3 scoops daily.

Track Food Intake. Keep a journal of what you eat for two weeks. If you’re looking for a product to help you do this, check out Fitday.
Track Allergies. Mark the days on a calender where you get & don’t get skin reactions like acne.

  1. Allergic reactions (such as skin breakouts, lactose intolerance and acne) are very common with a diet containing dairy.

  2. I agree with post and comments. A lot medicines can cause “acne” most times this is not acne, but different kind of allergy. It is not dangerous, but really depends on immune system of the person. Sometimes those allergies appear in 2-3 weeks which cause difficulties in predicting.

I don’t think whey protein is the contributing factor to acne.
Intensive working out results in an increase in testosterone, which is main culprit of acne.

  7. i heard that you can have acne for yousing tanning lotions in your face

  8. Ive used whey for years. I cant say that it ever cause me acne. The only thing I could say is that when I would start using whey shakes again is when I would really start working out hard. This makes me more sweating and boost hormone production which could def lead to break outs. Just my 2 cents!

The information is not entirely accurate. Whey does not cause acne, and acne is not a skin rash or allergy, unless you are referring to Rosacea.

Acne is caused by the excess production of oil (sebum) by the follicles in response to heightened levels of DHT, which is converted from Testosterone. The reason why weight lifting increase acne for some, is due to the fact that increasing musculature and workouts leads to an increase in Testosterone so that more is available to be converted.

I use whey all the time and have never had any outbreaks from it. I think its prob that men will build more testosterone when they work out which is usualy when they are taking whey.

Thanks for the info. I have 3 sons with acne.

  15. Youre dead on. Check your diet, keep a journal. The old myth of ‘chocolate and junk’ giving acne is false. If you keep track you will figure out what foods exacerbate acne.

  17. Journal Journal Journal!!!!

Not to mention testing for allergies can greatly reduce the symptoms of rosacea.

  18. well, based on my experience which of course i have acne during my younger years, i think its all about grooming and cleanliness. Clean the face every time.

  19. It has also been found that apart from whey protein, if you include bread and white food in your diet then it may also be a reason of acne. Because a research says that people who are folk eating whole grain they don’t have much acne problem if it is compared to the people who eat whit foods. And more research on treatment for acne is going on.

I just got on whey since I don’t get much of any acne breakouts anymore, soon as I got on a zit popped out. Makes me really wonder if it was a lead cause of my acne in high school and if I should take it now? I think I’m going to take it for another week, if my acne starts to spread or get worse I’m definitely going to get off of it. Everybody’s body is different, doctors and scientists don’t know everything you know. I personally believe it could effect it. But, I’m still not sure…
