This article is part 6 of my Break Out the Barbell series on exercises you can perform simply by using the barbell collecting dust in your garage. Today’s exercise focuses on not only your legs, but your lower back.
Stiff Leg Deadlift – Hamstring, Lower Back
Stand with the barbell in front of you on the floor, feet shoulder width apart. As you pick up the barbell take a grip that suits you, I’d recommend mixed grip, placing one hand with an overhand grip, the other with an underhand grip. Keeping your arms straight and your knees slightly bent, lift the barbell into starting position. To perform the move, lower the bar by bending your hips and lowering the bar to the ground, keeping your waist straight.
Again, while the move primarily works your hamstrings, you’ll feel your lower back at work. Make sure to keep your back straight throughout the move, pulling your shoulders back and pressing your chest out.
