barbell squatThis article is part 5 of my Break Out the Barbell series on exercises you can perform simply by using the barbell that is probably collecting dust in your garage.  Today’s exercise focuses on the legs.

Barbell Squat – Legs
Standing with your at about shoulder width, with your toes pointed slightly outward, place the barbell on your traps and shoulders.  Slowly lower your yourself as if you were sitting in a chair until your thighs are parallel to the floor, and push back up into the starting position.

Make sure you keep the bar off your beck, and be wary to never point your toes inward.  As your push yourself back up, remember that the force comes through your heals, not your toes.  Start with a small weight to get used to the motion.  If you can’t get your thighs parallel to the ground, take a plate off.
